Video Edit Pro - Video Trim App Reviews

9 Customer Reviews:

When I trim “lossless” video files (m2ts with dual language soundtrack), the sound is converted from 48 to 44 KHz, and the languages are mixed together. So it is not usable

tontonyves v3.1.2 · 10 years ago

I used this app to cut a few downloaded videos. The app is usable, but it is far from perfect: - When I watch video, I can click the scissors button to mark the start of the section (“in” marker), but I cannot mark the same way the end of the section (“out” marker). Say I marked the start of the section and I keep watchibg the movie. Here comes the moment when I want to finish this section. What should I do? A natural way would be to press a key or click a button. But in this app I need to pause, memorise or write down the current time, then drag the “end” marker to this point. It’s impossible to stop the marker exactly at this point, so I additionally have to click the Fine Adjust button and adjust the marker. - The standard keyboard shortcuts for “in” and “out” markers should work in this app: [ for “in” marker and ] for “out” marker. There are no keyboard shortcuts at all in this app. - There’s no fast forward/rewind. - In "the lossles trim” mode the resulting video has frozen frames (for a second or so) at the cut points (mp4 h264).

This software is a bunch of garbage. Open the software and nothing happens except you get the software name, Edit and Help drop down menus, but there is no way to open a file. Right click and try to open a video file with this software, and the supposedly supported mp4 format is not supported according to the error message displayed. This software is nothing but a SCAM!!! I really doubt if Apple is vetting all the software in the Mac App Store.

GeorgeF · 11 years ago

It does NOT work

The interface seems to be very good, but when you press the export… it only create a video of 5 sec with pieces of the original video.

Bernardo B · 11 years ago

Here is what the develop should add: 1) The screen can’t be resized! The app is one default size; you can’t drag an edge or corner to adjust it. That means your ENTIRE video fits in a window the size of a deck of playing cards, so if you have a very long video and it needs fine-tuning, good luck! The playback bar for the whole video is 5 inches long, so you’d better be able to set markers at pixel-level precision for a long video. 2) It’s hard to tell if what you select is the part you’re going to delete, or the part you’re going to save. 3) The button with the red “minus” sign doesn’t delete vodeo like one would expect; it deletes your markers. When you select a length of video and choose “Delete” (in the Edit menu), it doesn’t delete that video like you’d expect; it deletes the markers you’ve placed! What we need is a way to select a bit of video, DELETE that segment, and then move on. This app wants you to set ALL the markers for the sections you want to keep and delete, then export the entire thing at once. Editing on-the-fly would be so much easier. Give us a delete button that deletes the selected video, not the markers for the video. After all, that’s the entire point, but it’s not how you’ve programmed your marker controls.

All I was needing was a simple and quick way to trim large mp4 (h.264) files and the feature set/price balance of this one seemed to meet my demands. I tried the Lite version and the 3 minute clip rendered remarkably quickly, so I bit the bullet and purchased the full version. Just tested a 1080x1960 mp4 video of just over 2 hours in length (10Mb/s) and kept the ‘lossless’ button highlighted. The file exported in about 9 minutes on my mid-2014 Macbook Pro (2.8 GHz Intel Core i7). The file size is the same as the original file (I only trimmed off about 13 frames) and the quality seems to be the same (plus of course if it were re-encoding, the render time would be more like 2-3 hours), so the ‘lossless’ claim seems to be spot on. My only gripe is the slight awkwardness of the interface, but the same could be said about iMovie. I was able to do trims and exports in about 1-2 minutes of clicking around, though I imagine splitting and merging will take slightly longer to figure out. Overall this suits my needs quite well. A good purchase!

Trying to use this to “remove commercials” lossless. Hopefully a future update fixes the output to start and stop at the exact frames you requested. I ended up with excess frames before and after—even when using the “fine adjust” feature (when marking at a solid black frame this became obvious). A few more enhancements that would help: * Ability to specifiy the filename of the exported file. The developer has used a directory selection dialog instead of a filename save dialog. In my case, it changed the file extension from .m4v to .mp4 and re-used the same file name. * Sound while moving the playhead (to avoid truncated sounds on a fade to black) * More keyboard shortcuts, specifically for mark management * I’d rather see no Video Format, Frame Rate and Bit Rate options when using lossless trim than a drop down control with only “smart” in the list. Smart isn’t the right term, its "same as source". * A better button for export. It looks like an undo/refresh button. Thanks for the mouse over tool tip to help clarify the ambiguity. * Support complex trimming without intermediate exports and a merge. * Add a video by dragging into the application instead of forcing the use of the "Add Videos" button. * "Fine Adjust" is the default and the unit moved by the keyboard is in frames, not time. * A selection indicator to let you know that keyboard left and right will either move the playhead, the cut marker or both. Hoping a future update works better for my purposes.

ne1for23 · 10 years ago

Based on the title, I thought it would losslessly merge video files. It doesn’t. The ‘lossless’ refers only to splitting. Maybe that would be useful to some, but it’s not what I needed.

Really like this app, because it worked simple right away after I downloaded it. This app is exactly what i was looking for. Thank you

Easy! Great simple editing program

I'm an iPhone user (video and pictures), this app is the simplest I've found for merging videos or splitting them. Easy to use, short lerning curve, easy export into different formats for YouTube or other uses. Great value!

TR64ever · 3 years ago

Takes a few minutes to figure it out

But, once I got the hang of it, it seemed to work fine. I'm old school, and I like documented instructions, so a user manual would be nice. Not elaborate, but something basic with some instructions on how to do it.

VNB-CAB · 3 years ago

Lots of Features - Short on Help

It looks like this app will do about editing that an ordinary user would want to do. I just started with it to clip the front end off a .mov file and it worked fine - BUT - It was not evident at all about how to save the edited .mov file. After fussing with it for maybe an hour, I discovered that you have to Export the file to save the changes. The Export function is not intuitve either. There is no place to specify the name of the exported file. But, charge ahead and you will find that the exported file is saved with the a number appended to the original file name. And have patience; it takes about an hour for the app to export a 45GB .mov file. There is a link to a YouTube video that show a lot of things being done but only a very rudimentary explanation of what those things are. All-in-all the app is worth the $5 purchase price, but you have to expect a steep learning curve.

This App is Easy to Use

I’m enjoying using this app. It has been pretty easy to use. Video trim is definitely straightforward, which is mainly what I use it for. I’m working on learning how to use the merge… Crossing my fingers that it will be just as easy!!

HappyTina7 · 5 years ago

Yes...once you get the hang of it...

This app is not perfect from the standpoint of intuitive operation nor user interface. BUT it does what it is intended to do (as the man said...once you get the hang of it) and I don't know a better way of accompishing what this accomplishes. As far as controlling the time points where one may wish to make a cut or start or stop the video, I wish the interface were a little more like Audicity is for audio. It is hard to precisely position the cursor. If there were a zoom into a sub-set of the whole, finding the exact place to position the cursor would be easier. But as said, I am able to achieve the end product I'm after...it is sometimes just not as easy to get to that point as it should be.

JBBevan · 5 years ago

Real basic. Does the job

Not real intuitive but not hard to figure out. I’ve only done small files don’t know about large files. I would consider getting the version that has more features for 3 dollars more.

Cheesy Interface

App has a cheesy interface. Not very intuitive nor Mac like. Only bought it because I had to as QuickTime was having a problem saving my file for some reason.

SomeUserPersonWhoisMe · 5 years ago

Easy once I got the hang of it

I had struggled for hours with iMovie and FinalCutPro and failed to learn how to trim the beginning off a video, so I bought this simpler application. I then still struggled until a friend had a look, and figured out that when you hit "Add Trim Marker", the red triangle that appears at the point where you want to trim the video, splits into two, such that, if you want to trim the bit before the triangle marker, you drag the left half of the triangle to the left, then when you hit the "Delete marked segment", that bit you selected by dragging that half-triangle is deleted. Finally! IT is actually easy. It just was in no way obvious to me that the triagle marker split in two and that you drag half of it to select what you want to trim. (I would give the application 5 stars had it been more obvious how to select a part to trim.)

Stanzalovergirl · 5 years ago

Perfect for me

Once you learn the interface, this app is pretty powerful. East to trim, merge, split, or even crop videos. It's exactly what I've been looking for as an occasional editor.

works for my specific need

i needed a video editor app for one specific purpose: split two videos into segments then mix them into one highlights video. it was a task for work. On windows, who knows what type of pro software package I woudl need. This app, for $5 it did exactly what I needed. Likely a one time use but I finished my work project so I feel good.

Trimming lost picture/sound synchronization

I cut from the beginning and the end of TV recordings to trim to start and end of the desired show. That works. But saving the file even in its original mp4 format takes forever. Is that because the program does not queue on key frames? With SimpleMovieX it takes only a few minutes to save a 90 minute video. Unfortunately it won't run on OS X Catallina. I now played the trimmed file and sadly, the audio was way out of synchronization. I made a bad purchase.

Wolf5003 · 6 years ago

Just What I was looking for

All I wanted to do was to concatenate some video files that I have. I looked around and found this one. It is simple, extremely simple to use for what it was designed for: Trim, Split, Crop and Merge. Since I didn't want or need complex video editing capabilities, this was perfect. Other apps come with full editing abilities but also come with a very steep learning curve. And since it is simple, the price is nice too compared with full video editing apps. I gave it 4 stars because there is room for improvement. I see no way of saving my settings. So each time I start the app, I have to select the parameters even though I'm doing the same task over and over. A minor point but it is not possible to name the merged output file, instead it is always "Video Merge". BTW, I have only used the merge function. Also a batch capability is on my wishlist.

Didn't Work for Me the First Time!

Why you can't select a Start Time and a Finsih Time and simply export that video is mystifying. Not intuitive. Too much work to figure out how to trim a small clip from a large video.

Worked the first time

Apple is notorious for being condescending to their users. [i.e. “You will get what we give you and LIKE IT.”] After being abused by “iMovie” it really made me question if my MacBook Pro could accomplish video editing. The editing capabilities of “Video Edit Pro” performed well. I recommend buying this app shortly after you uninstall "iMovie".

Nick09345098203948 · 6 years ago

JUST OK

this app works, but doesn’t have the versatility i’d like. there’s no Undo or Command+Z, copy/paste keystroke shortcuts, etc. i bought it to edit out band performances for a longer show file. there’s no way to extract a clip of video and save it as a new file. you have to delete everything else, keep and export your clip, then start again with your oroginal file. there are no fades or effects. it’s faily stable and the cropping, trimming, features, etc. work pretty decently. i’ll finish my project and then look for something else. for $5 it’s fine.

kernsey · 6 years ago

cut out pieces and then save without re-encoding!

The trimming works well, but the real brilliance of this app is when you select the "use lossless" setting, under "Export format & setting". I use it, for example, to trim segments out of a .mov file (with frame-precise cuts) and then save it without re-encoding as an mp4 . The save is almost instantaneous!

Norm M · 7 years ago

Pro version is great!

For users that are very aware of how much space transcoding takes up, this application is excellent. Many of the movies I keep are in the MP4 format and if I wanted to trim off the end of the credits or a long company logo at the start, I used to bring it into final cut pro, transcode it to Pro Res and then edit and then transcode it back to MP4. I thought it was a necessary evil as I have been trying to find an MP4 EDIT that doesnt need space for transcoding-- especially if you are just going to be keeping the final product in the MP4 format. The program is great for this kinds of time consuming jobs. It doesn't replace final cut for complex work, but the time savings and the minimal hard disc space usage during processing is huge. I strongly recommend this application to anyone who has an MP4 movie/clip library of more than 300 items and wants to trim them, just a bit.

Worth the $6 if you are doing simple stuff

This is the only software for video I’ve ever used. It works pretty well and I’m no power user.

MadisonGrog · 7 years ago

It Works

I tried the lite version and it seems to have done the job. It’s a little difficult to tell, because the watermark is HUGE and the video underneath the mark is much darker. I decided to try the pro version, since it’s only $4.99. I was looking for somethin that could merge my videos without increasing the file size. I have video converter software that lets me merge and convert formats and it works well, but most of the time, it greatly increases the file size to more than the sum of the files that I’m merging. It doesn’t always, but when it does, I then have to use another (free) app to then decrease the file size back down to its original size and maybe a little bit less, actually. The problem with it is that to make like that, keeping quality loss to a minimum, it takes forever, especially it I use the 2-pass function. I tried the lite, to see if the merge function would keep the file size close to the same size as the inividual files and it appeared to do just that. If I find that the pro version does the same, I’ll upgrade my evaluation to 5 stars. I’m actually running it now. Update I’ve now used the pro version about 4 or 5 times and it does a good job, except for one minor thing that bothers me a bit. It always cuts off about 1 second at the beginning of the video, so that it’s always a second less. If I have a slight black intro to the start of the video, the editied version stars with the video already in progress. While certainly not a fatal flaw, I would like to see that corrected, because I like the lead-in, because the videos seem cut off and unprofessional to me without it. Otherwise, I’m pretty satisfied with the results. The amount of the file size is generally very close to the original, whereas other editors that I use a frequently a lot more, especially if you’re changing formats. In my case, I was merely increasing the volume, because some of my videos were too low.

Adequate for those who miss old quicktime

Ever since the old, simple, reliable quicktime went away, it has been hard to find a simple video editor that could trim clips down, or merge them. This provides that and I went ahead and bought the $4.99 version. But it isn’t perfect, but it will do. First, the interface is silly and very unMac. On the video trim page, every time you have to push the Add Trim Marker button in order to get the clipping marks to show up. And when you press delete marked video segment, you get a “are you sure you want to do this” alert box. Rather than have that, they should add a simple undo button. That way if you make a mistake, you can simply correct it without having to click yes every time. The Snapshot button is a joke. You cannot specify what you want to title snapshots, nor can you specify into what file the snapshots go. You cannot resize the interface window. You are stuck with its standard size of the interface window. I do like that it lets you export into several formats, but the exporting is SLOW. Not a great software, but it gets the job done.

Basic Video Ediiting Made Simple

I only use video editing software to either trim or merge videos. Trying to use iMovie that came with my MacBook Pro has been an exercise in fultitlity. But this Video Edit Pro is exactly what I have been looking for. An easy to use, no frills, affordable, video editing software.

Jade947 · 7 years ago

Seems to do the job, BUT . . .

If you bother with the trial version, you get great big, darkened red watermark which is more of an overlaying text box than a watermark. Therefore, the resulting file is useless to you. So, I bought the Full Version. Now it leaves a light grey watermark in the upper right hand corner which says “MusicAndVideoHD!” It’s not as obnoxious as the huge red one in the center, but I thought I paid to get rid of watermarks!! I’m not happy with it. It could be a little more user-friendly, also, but maybe I’m a little slow with such things. At first, I gave it two stars but then I relented and gave a third star, remembering that you get what you pay for. I can’t expect an awful lot for $5.00, I guess. In the end, it did what I bought it for but not sure I’ll ever use it again anyway. Hate that watermark though!

Latest Revision Still Valuable

This is a good app which does some things (like lossless trim, merge, convert) that can’t be found in one app at this price. However, there are a few notes on this latest revision that have me scratching my head. This is a major redesign/renaming of the product. It should not be hidden in a minor subversion release. Cursor control is gone. This means all trimming has to be done by click-dragging the endpoints. I used to be able to use left & right arrows to control trim endpoints in gross and fine controls. No more. In fact, holding buttons down with mouse key doesn’t even repeat. You have to click repeatedly to move through your video. This seems like a step in the wrong direction. There is a bug in fine adjustments that is infuriating. When editing trim endpoints, first adjust the left side, then the right side moves to an aribitrary point. If you adjust the right side first this does not happen. Maddening. Feature requests: I have already communicated directly with the designer, but none of my requests were implemented. This is a fine editing and conversion engine and a simple interface which should be able to handle some of these: 1. Variable cursor/scrubbing control: allow user-specified increments (from a few minutes down to a single frame) for two different forward/backward buttons (left and cmd-left, right and cmd-right) so that the user can quickly get around the video at a rate that’s best for them. Optionally, add scrub dial support. 2. Batch mode/Apple Script mode. 3. Ability to read in cue files (preferably in Comskip format) and do trimming automatically. 4. The ability to save a project and come back to it later. Keep it up! This is still the only app of its kind on the App Store.

Not Lossless

I bought this app to losslessly split a video created in iMovie and recorded at 25000 kb/s, 29.97 fps. This product's maximum bitrate is 20,000 kb/s. Please note that even if that is enough throughput for you, you must still turn off the Lossless Trim feature as this will give you even more lossy results; 6000 kb/s.

NovaPyrographics · 9 years ago

Works great

I tried (and paid for) several similar apps. This one works best for quick trimming and splitting videos and is easy to use. I like how you can add multiple in/out points, such as removing from the start, the middle and the end and not have to end up with multiple parts that have to be joined later. The ability to add a bunch of files with their own in/out points or apply the same to all and then batch process is a timesaver. The output files appear to be lossless and it saves faster then using QT and smartly preserves the original filenames appending numbers if there is a duplicate (unlike QT which turns everthing into untitled as soon as you trim something) I would like to see it use the system font, have the ability to resize the window and not throw an error if I drop files directly on the icon rather then the apps file list. Despite my minor complaints, its a solid 5 star.

It’s okay, but lacks a few features it needs
